Unit 5

Network: A group of computers linked together

Why?
- to transfer information between the computers
- to share resources
- to store or save data to a single point

Peer-to-peer
– simplest and cheapest method of networking.
Disadvantage – all operations are occurring on the local machine.
All it takes – network card in each computer and a network cable.

Non-peer networks
– computers connected together where a server(s) controls client(s).

Environment: how the users are controlled
- Workgroup – users are controlled at the local level (doesn’t need special software)
- Domain – users are controlled from the server level (needs special software)

Needed for Network: network card, cable, same language (protocol)
Protocol – language that allows the machines to recognize each other, eg. Netbeui, TCP/IP
